Say it clearly (without making it worse)

Hi Reader,

So you know you need to have the conversation…

But now you’re thinking:

“What do I actually say?”

This is where most leaders get stuck.

🚫 What Doesn’t Work

Most difficult conversations go sideways because we:

Soften the message too much

Talk around the issue

Or come in too direct and trigger defensiveness

Either way—the message doesn’t land.

🧠 A Better Way to Structure It

Here’s a simple structure that works:

1. Start with clarity (facts, not emotion) from your perspective:
“I’ve been noticing…”

2. Explain the impact
“Here’s why this matters…”

3. Set expectations moving forward
“This is what needs to happen going forward…”

That’s it. Clear. Direct. Respectful.

📖 What Happens When You Get It Right

I’ve seen leaders delay conversations for weeks…

When they finally had the conversation I usually hear that it went far better than expected once they finally addressed the issue clearly.

Because most people don’t need perfection they need clarity

Can I tell you where most leadership growth breaks down? Hi Reader, Can I tell you something I see leaders struggle with all the time? Most leaders who are stuck already know what they should be doing. They've read the books. They've listened to the podcasts. They've sat through the trainings. But when real pressure hits, things change. A hard conversation. A difficult season. Something they've been avoiding. Suddenly, that knowledge becomes a lot harder to apply consistently. This month...

The CALG Leadership Brief: June 9, 2026 Hi Reader, Here's a pattern I see all the time. One week a leader works on accountability. The next week they're focused on a delegation issue. The week after that, a conflict came up so they're handling that now. Hard work. Real effort. Genuine intention to improve. But six months later, the same problems are still there. Just dressed differently. Sound familiar? Reacting to every problem is not the same as solving them. When you're managing people,...
